What is World Food Day?

World Food Day is an internationally recognized day that aims to raise awareness of ongoing efforts to reduce poverty, hunger and food insecurity. The date itself commemorates the date that all United Nations members observed the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Our Partnership with Food Banks Canada

Food Banks Canada is dedicated to helping Canadians living with food insecurity. The organization supports a network of Provincial Associations, affiliate food banks and food agencies that work at the community level to relieve hunger across the country. Its focus is on maximizing collective impact, strengthening local capacity and reducing the need for food banks.

In a single month, nearly 1.5 million people visit a food bank in Canada.

33%

of those relying on food banks nationally are children, even though they only represent 20% of the population.

45%

of those using food banks are from single-person households.

40%

of food distributed by Canadian food banks is fresh (e.g. milk, eggs, bread, proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables).
